How to hang curtains correctly: the “High and Wide” rule
Hanging curtains is one of those tasks that seems simple until you see how much a difference 2 inches can make. If you want to know how to hang curtains like a pro, remember this: High and Wide.
1. Go High (Ceiling height matters)
Mount your curtain rod 4–6 inches above the window frame, or even higher (up to the ceiling or crown molding). This draws the eye upward and makes your ceilings look higher.
2. Go Wide (Window scale)
Extend the rod 6–12 inches beyond the sides of the window frame. This allows the curtains to rest against the wall when open, exposing the entire window and making it feel much larger than it actually is.
3. Choose the Right Length
Your curtains should ideally "kiss" the floor or puddle slightly (if you want a romantic look). Curtains that end halfway down the wall are like high-water pants—they just look a bit off.
4. Double the Fabric
For a full, luxurious look, ensure your curtain panels are 2 to 2.5 times the width of the window. Skimping on fabric makes window treatments look thin and cheap.
