Gallery wall layout guide: plan your art display
A great gallery wall layout doesn't happen by accident. It's a balance of scale, spacing, and personal story. Whether you're displaying family photos or abstract prints, here is how to create a professional home art display.
1. Find Your Anchor
Start with your largest piece of art. This is your anchor. Place it slightly off-center to create visual interest, or dead center if you prefer a formal, symmetrical grid.
2. Consistent Spacing
The secret to a curated look is keeping the distance between frames consistent. Aim for 2-3 inches between each frame. If they are too far apart, the collection loses its cohesive "single unit" feel.
3. Mix Your Textures
Don't just use one type of frame. Mix wood tones, metals, and even some 3D objects like a small shelf or a decorative plate to add depth and personality to your wall.
4. Eye Level is Key
The center of your gallery wall should be roughly at eye level, about 57-60 inches from the floor. If you're hanging it above a sofa, ensure there is 6-10 inches of breathing room between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the lowest frame.
